entrusting Fr Maciel to the mercy of God

Father Maciel, founder of the Legionnaires of Christ, died this week. The Los Angeles Times and Whispers in the Loggia provide coverage.

What else can one do than commend his soul to the mercy of God… and offer prayers for the members of the community he founded?

Official announcement from the Legion is here:

Father Álvaro Corcuera, General Director, together with the Legionaries of Christ and the members of the Regnum Christi Movement announce the departure of their beloved founder, Father

to heaven on January 30, 2008, and express their deep gratitude to all those who wish to unite in prayer for the eternal repose of his soul.

By the will of Father Maciel, the funeral takes place in an atmosphere of prayer, in a simple and private manner.

The “departure to heaven” bit seems a bit presumptuous (and typical) of the Legion, but we can pray for God’s mercy.
